Today, we’re speaking with Ryan Kelly, Head of School at Carrollwood Day School (CDS). At CDS, character education is a focal point for student growth in the college readiness process. In this episode, we discuss the importance of viewing students holistically, educating students about up-and-coming careers in STEM, and engaging students in self-discovery before determining “right fit” colleges and careers.
About Ryan Kelly
Ryan has been working in education for twenty years, having taught AP chemistry, along with IB chemistry and IB mathematics at Riverstone International School. While at Riverstone, he advanced to grade level lead, department chair, and Head of the Upper School. Ryan also obtained the certification of National Board Certified Teacher of Chemistry and the Boise Rotary Award for Distinguished Educators. His education includes a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Oregon, an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Colorado, and an Ed.D. in Educational and Organizational Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania.
Before becoming Head of School at Carrollwood Day School in 2013, Ryan attended both the NAIS and FCIS New Head of School Institutes, along with the Kellogg School of Management to learn more about the business side of being an independent school head. As Head of School, he has implemented numerous initiatives centered on the parent/student experience, STEM education, innovation, and leading multimillion dollar capital campaigns to completion.
Outside of CDS, he has served as the President of BAAIS (Bay Area Association of Independent Schools). Ryan is also an active board member for the MISBO organization, regularly chairs FCIS school accreditations, and teaches courses in school finance at the FCIS Prospective Heads’ Institute.
