Today, we’re speaking with Dr. William Logan, Principal of Hillside High School. In this episode, he discusses his views on the “human aspect” of teaching. Through relationship-building and nurturing support under the guidance of Dr. Logan, Hillside High School has managed to become the high school with the higest graduation rate amongst traditional schools in Durham.
About Dr. William Logan
Dr. Logan began his professional career as a high school English teacher in 1997 while pursuing his Master of Education degree in school counseling from SC State University. He was recipient of the Sallie Mae Outstanding First Year Teacher Award for his district in 1998. In 2000, he began studies at the University of Southern Mississippi where he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Education Administration and Supervision in 2002.
After serving as the Director of the Odyssey Educational Center, Dr. Logan relocated to North Carolina where he worked as an assistant principal in Wake and Durham counties from 2003–2007. Dr. Logan was selected as the founding principal of Hillside New Tech High School in 2007. The school was also identified as a Demonstration Site by the New Tech Network and was chosen as a Learning Laboratory Initiative School by the NC New School’s Project. In 2011, he was selected as Spectacular Magazine’s Man of the Year in the field of education.
Dr. Logan was asked to lead Hillside High School in 2012 navigating its transformational efforts. Hillside now boasts having the highest graduation rate among traditional high schools in Durham. In 2014, William was selected as Durham Public Schools Principal of the Year and was the 2014 recipient of the NC Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development Outstanding Young Educator Award. In 2016, he was named the NC Association of Educator’s Principal of the Year. Recently, he was named as the 2017NC Association of Student Council’s Administrator of the Year.
