Today, we are speaking with David Porter, Director of Upper School and a founding faculty member of the Journeys School of Teton Science Schools in Jackson, Wyoming. Listen in as David details the very special road that students of the Journeys School travel on the way to college. At his school, the college readiness process is more than a path. It’s a journey that molds its students into more than just college graduates — into mission-driven advocates and environmental stewards who make the world a better place.
About David Porter
David Porter is a founding faculty member of Journeys School of Teton Science Schools, which was founded in 2001. He has been teaching at the college and high school levels since 1994. He is currently an English teacher, founding faculty member, Upper School Director, and IB Diploma Program Coordinator for Journeys.
David’s current professional interests includes the study of manifestations of mental illness in literary characters, as well as how culture positively and negatively affects the individual. He is deeply passionate about ensuring that his students develop empowered voices in their writing and speech. In his free time, David enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, fishing, hunting, reading and recreating in the outdoors.
About the Journeys School of Teton Science Schools
“Ordinary” is not a word used to describe a Journeys High School student. In any given week, after a full day of rigorous classes that utilize an experiential approach within a demanding International Baccalaureate curriculum, you will find its students:
Attending athletic practices and play rehearsals
Performing in an a cappella group or in a speech and debate competition
Problem-solving for the Robotics team or for Model U.N.
Volunteering in the community through outreach projects and service on charitable boards
Because the Journeys School recognizes that every child is different, it lives by the belief of educating the whole child and working to instill a hunger within its students for both learning in the classroom and in their personal lives. This mission is partly achieved by keeping its school size purposefully small in order to maximize individualized learning opportunities. Small class sizes and an abundant, experienced professional staff allow students to “orbit” to studies beyond grade level when they are ready and to have the support they need when facing tasks they find difficult.
The school’s four year college counseling program not only results in 100% college acceptance rates into 4-year colleges and universities for its graduates, it also ensures that they are prepared to succeed in higher education and beyond. Journeys School is the only independent International Baccalaureate Middle Years and Diploma Program World School in Wyoming and one of only 49 independent schools nationally to be awarded an endowment from the Malone Family Foundation to provide scholarship assistance to gifted and talented students.
